  • The Fantastic Four engage a witch, Agatha Harkness, to care for Reed and Sue's baby son, Franklin.  She proves her usefulness by routing the Frightful Four(Susan Richards returns to the FF in an active role.)

  • When a comet brings the Absorbing Man back to Earth, the Hulk defeats him by changing back to Banner.

  • The Atlantean Warlord Seth uses the lost Horn of Proteus to again call giant sea monsters to attack the surface world.
  • The Sub-Mariner aids Dr. Strange in repelling the return of the Undying Ones from another dimension. When Namor and their leader, the Nameless One, fall into the aliens' dimension, Strange pursues and rescues him, but stays behind to hold back the invading forces (and is eventually taken prisoner).  Some time later, the Hulk is drawn into this strange dimension by cultists led by Barbara Norris (later the Valkyrie), and after foiling the Nameless One, both he and Strange return to the Earth dimension, leaving Norris behind.  Dr. Strange, tired from his long captivity, decides to retire from being a mystic guardian.
  • Namor battles a creation of Warlord Krang and Dr. Dorcas: Orka the "human killer whale".
  • Magneto manipulates the Sub-Mariner into attacking the surface world, after which he holds Lady Dorma and Susan Richards ransom and proclaims himself "overlord" of the planet. (Shortly afterwards, Crystal is forced to return to the Inhumans due to the rampant air pollution in NYC).
  • Namor encounters the hybrid human-Lemurian Llyra who, after imprisoning King Karthon, plans to conquer the surface world.

  • When the Odinsleep comes over Odin, Loki usurps the throne of Asgard.  With Odin held prisoner, Surtur is able to attack.
  • Loki switches bodies with Thor, who is mistakenly sent to Mephisto's realm as punishment for Loki's crimes.

  • Modok devises a complex plan to manipulate college unrest, Baron Strucker, Dr. Doom and a robot Bucky Barnes to drive Captain America mad.

  • The Avengers battle Scorpio and the astrology-based Zodiac Cartel.  It is revealed that this Scorpio is actually Nick Fury, working undercover.
  • Yellowjacket and the Wasp leave the Avengers.  Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch rejoin the team to fight Arkon the Imperion from the parallel world, Polemachus. 
  • The Avengers encounter the Native American superhero, Red Wolf, while Wanda and the Vision begin developing a rapport.
  • The Zodiac Cartel hold the Avengers and Manhattan island hostage, until Daredevil foils their plans.  
  • The Enchantress creates the Lady Liberators: the Black Widow, Medusa, the Scarlet Witch, and the Wasp, led by the enigmatic Valkyrie (actually the Enchantress in disguise using the Asgardian Valkyrie's physical aspect).

  • The X-Men meet Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire, a mutant created from the radiation of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
  • Charles Xavier returns and repels the alien Z’nox by linking the minds of all humanity. The strain causes him to fall into a coma, but he is revived when the Hulk leads the X-Men to a device created by Bruce Banner.

  • The Schemer (later revealed as the Kingpin’s son Richard) complicates life for Fisk, his wife Vanessa and Spider-Man.
  • Spider-Man meets the Black Widow (now in a new costume and neither working for SHIELD nor the Avengers).
  • Parker, delirious from the flu, reveals that he is Spider-Man.  Hobie Brown (the ex-Prowler) impersonates Spider-Man to help cover Peter's indiscretion.
  • Gwen's father, Captain George Stacy, dies during a battle between Spider-Man and Dr Octopus.

  • Tony meets Kevin O'Brian, the inventor, during a protest rally.

  • For the first time, Banner is (temporarily) separated from the Hulk. While hiding in the LA slums, the Hulk meets a sympathetic teenager named Jim Wilson (later revealed to be the Falcon's nephew). They are then kidnapped by HYDRA, in the process of rebuilding itself and looking for new resources.

  • Ka-Zar meets Garokk, the 500-year old Petrified Man.  They return to the Savage Land to battle the war-mongering Sun God queen Zaladane.

  • Dr. Doom is faced with an attempted coup by Prince Rudolfo of the former ruling family of Latveria, aided by the alien Faceless One.  He also creates the artificial Doomsman, but the creature rebels against its creator.
