Early 20th Century

  • 1920: In the Antarctic, Capt. Leonard McKenzie of the ship "Oracle" encounters and marries the Atlantean Emperor Thakorr's daughter Princess Fen.  They do this without the approval of the Atlanteans and Thakorr kills McKenzie in retaliation.  Namor the Sub-Mariner is born of McKenzie and Fen’s union (FF Annual 1).  In this same expedition Paul Destine (Destiny) discovers the Lemurian Helmet of Power, but is buried in an avalanche for four decades. (Iron Man & Sub-Mariner 1).
  • Maximus plots an alliance with agents of Ronan the Accuser to later overthrow the Kree Supreme Intelligence.  Black Bolt, enraged, speaks for the first time, destroying the Kree ship and driving Maximus mad.  The crashing Kree craft kills their parents (Avengers 95).
  • WW I: The British crime fighter Union Jack emerges and battles the vampire Baron Blood (Invaders 7, 8). 
  • Victor Von Doom, son of a gypsy doctor and a witch, is orphaned by corrupt officials and fearful villagers. He is cared for by his father’s friend Boris and a female gypsy companion, Valeria.  Shortly afterwards, he discovers his mother’s sorcerous legacy and begins studying sorcery and science (FF Annual 2/FF 278).
  • Reed Richards' father Nathaniel leaves for another dimension in his own invention.
  • Ben Grimm becomes leader of the Yancy Street Gang.
  • Reed meets Grimm and Von Doom at State University.  An experiment in which Von Doom was trying to contact his dead mother explodes and scars his face.  He travels to Tibet where he begins training and eventually creates an armored suit (FF Ann 2).
  • Reed meets Susan Storm. 
  • Charles Xavier attends Oxford University and falls in love with Moira MacTaggert.
  • Skrulls kidnap Machine Gun Martin and begin basing the culture of one of their worlds on 30's America.  (FF 91).
  • Namor the Sub-Mariner meets his cousin Namora (Marvel Mystery Comics 82, Sub-Mariner 54).
  • 1939: The Human Torch android is created by Professor Phineas Horton (Marvel Mystery 1, Avengers 133).
  • 1939: The Sub-Mariner begins hostilities against land-dwellers under Emperor Thakorr's orders.  He encounters the Human Torch and befriends the human policewoman Betty Dean (Marvel Mystery Comics 3).
  • WW II: Sgt Fury and the Howling Commandos battle Baron Wolfgang von Strucker.
  • 1941: The super-soldier Captain America is created from volunteer Steve Rogers during Operation:Rebirth and Dr Abraham Erskine’s vita-ray/super-soldier formula.  He is joined by a side-kick, Bucky Barnes and battles the Red Skull. (CA Comics 1/CA 109, 255).   Captain America's shield is created by scientist Myron MacLain in a freak vibranium accident (CA 303).
  • After Hitler bombs Atlantis, the Sub-Mariner joins with Captain America (w Bucky) and the Human Torch (w Toro) to assist the Allies as the Invaders (GS Defenders 1, GS Invaders 1)  (and later in 1946 as the All-Winners Squad).  During this time Cap meets Sgt Nick Fury.
  • The original Union Jack’s daughter, Jacqueline Falsworth, is bitten by Baron Blood and receives a blood transfusion from the Human Torch.  She gets super-speed and becomes Spitfire, eventually joining the Invaders.  The elder Falsworth’s son, Brian becomes the Mighty Destroyer, and later becomes the 2nd Union Jack.
  • Captain America falls in love with the freedom fighter Peggy Carter but loses contact with her in France (Tales of Suspense 77).
  • The Liberty Legion (Blue Diamond, Jack Frost, Miss America, the Whizzer, the Patriot, Red Raven and the Thin Man) battle domestic threats during the war (Invaders 6, Marvel Premiere 29).  Another group made up of 2nd generation Invaders (Bucky, Toro, etc..) form the Kid Commandos (Invaders 28). 
  • While doing research in ways to rescue his mother from Mephisto, Victor von Doom helps Hitler summon the Asgardian Thor into the war, but quickly betrays the Führer (Invaders 32,33).
  • Hitler banishes Baron Strucker from Germany (Sgt Fury 29).  He spends the next few years helping a new Japanese underworld group eventually named HYDRA, and becomes the Supreme Hydra (Captain Savage 2-4). When the war destroys most Hydra bases in Europe, Strucker returns to Hitler's side.  The Red Skull secretly takes over the remaining Hydra bases in Germany (Capt America 144-148).  The American branch is taken over by corporate leader Arnold Brown (Strange Tales 135-141).
  • 1942: A cannister of vibranium from 1976 is accidentally sent back to 1942 so the Fantastic Four travel to this time period to retrieve it, aided by the Invaders (FF Annual11). Ben on his own meets the Liberty Legion (MTIO Annual 1).  
  • Sgt. Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos are assisted by Ben Grimm, fighter pilot (Marvel Two-in-One 77).
  • 1943: Dr. Strange's battle with Baron Mordo and the Dread Dormammu take them here from 1981.  Dormammu attempts to use the mystics of the Nazi regime to allow his control over the Earth dimension. Strange is assisted by Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos (Dr. Strange 50, 51).
  • Captain America seals Baron Zemo in his hood with his own weapon, Adhesive-X (FF Annual 11).  Later while fighting Baron Zemo’s drone plane, Cap falls into the sea and is frozen into suspended animation, while Bucky seemingly dies in an explosion. (Avengers 56).
  • Peter Parker’s parents are killed in Algeria while spying on the Red Skull for the US. (Spider-Man Annual 5).
  • 1945: The Human Torch and his partner Toro kill Hitler.  However his brain patterns are projected into a Hitler clone created by Arnim Zola.  The clone later surfaces as the first Hate Monger (Super Villain Team-Up 17).  The Red Skull goes into suspended animation after accidentally being exposed to a gas during the fall of Berlin (Tales of Suspense 79).
  • Nick Fury receives the Infinity Formula which prevents him from aging (Marvel Spotlight 31).
